Two Upcoming Photo Talks
by Brad on Nov.04, 2009
Wanted to give a shout about two upcoming and local talks that look pretty interesting.
The first is by local photographer Eros Hoagland and will be hosted at the Exposure Gallery, Thursday, November 5th at 7pm. Hoagland, a photojournalist who has covered many areas of unrest around the world, will be talking about his recent experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Exposure Gallery is at 801 Howard, at 4th.
The second will be at the San Francisco Art Institute, this Friday evening where PhotoAlliance will be hosting photographer Jim Goldberg. Goldberg, a Magnum member since 2006, will talk about his project Open See, a series about refugees, immigration, and trafficking in Greece. The SFAI is located at 600 Chestnut (at Jones) – the talk begins at 7:30pm. Probably good to get there a little early.
I’ve been to many talks at both the Exposure Gallery and PhotoAlliance and they’ve all been excellent. Unfortunately I’ll probably have to pass on these events cuz I’m really sick with the flu now, but thought others would like to know about them.

Oh, I’m just crushed that I’m going to be out of town and miss Jim Goldberg. I am such a fan of his work! I hope someone else will go and give me a report.

I think I might try to make it to both… Sound very interesting…
Spectacular shot! Tell me those aren’t building shadows on the undersides of the clouds, because that’s what I’m seeing!!!
And hope you get through the flu o.k. — I know someone who had an seemingly near-death bout with it…

I’m still trying to figure that out Donald. I shot it through a hotel window which had a black granite reflective sill – and with my lens not against the glass, but at an angle. It’s gotta be a reflection onto the window glass…

Hey Brad — I just got back from Eros Hoagland’s show and slide-show talk and I barely know what to say except that it made a deep impact on me. I sort of already knew this, but there is an unbelievable amount of violence in this world…

Sadly that’s true. And it seems to be what a large element of what’s covered in documentary photojournalism today. Not that that’s necessarily bad, just the way it is.
I really like the Exposure Gallery and the photo talks hosted every first Thursday. Though the gallery is small, the focus on documentary is first-rate with amazing photographers and presentations.
Actually, I think the smallness of the gallery creates an intimate atmosphere between presenter and audience that’s lost in other photo-talk venues held in large auditoriums.
Just an FYI, Exposure Gallery was started by Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Kim Komenich and documentary photographer Rick Rocamora – two incredible photographers and nice people in general. I took a journalism class from Kim almost a year ago and learned a lot…

Just wanted to add that I also made it to the Jim Goldberg talk at the S.F. Art Institute last night. More human suffering — the human trafficing really got to me… Interesting how he got his subjects to write on their photos in some of his work. The guy, prior to the last six years with Magnum goes way back 30 years — and he started right there at SFAI… (I can remember spooking around SFAI as a teenage visitor 48 years ago — god, am I feeling old right now)

Still feeling crummy today, but maybe I can make the Goldberg talk at the SFAI tomorrow.

Damn can’t make the Hoagland talk because of class, but I’d like to make Goldberg. Thanks for the heads up Brad!

Hope you enjoy it. Sadly I’m still knocked down so need to pass…
