I didn’t see the value in paying $16 for a ride to the top of the Space Needle — instead I fired this shot for $0 from the balcony of a high rise several blocks away. Since I didn’t have my tri-pod, I opted to use the ledge and the internal 2 second timer.
Here are some other facts:
Exposure Program: Aperture-priority AE
Exposure: 30 seconds
Aperture: f/16.0
Focal Length: 17 mm
ISO Speed: 200

I commend you for avoiding noise by sticking with a fairly low ISO.
Cool shot…
I attended the 1961 World’s Fair and went up in the Space Needle — it was fun and definitely didn’t cost $16 in those days…
thanks, Don. if i can — i generally try to shoot low. lucky for me, there was a ledge available.
i do wish i had lowered the exposure compensation a bit in-camera.
I’m totally still learning but here’s a similar shot.

I took this with my Canon G10 and I took over 50 just to finally get one that i was happy with but the issue is there’s still blur. Is it really just that my lens is slower than most? I really need to get an SLR.
looks like you shot this at 6/10th of a second at F/2.8: http://www.flickr.com/photos/adamjackson/3923463357/meta/in/set-72157622357516232
generally anything shot hand-held at less than 1/60th of a second will result in camera shake. i can get away with 1/40th sometimes if i hold real still and use the image stabilization option on some of my faster lenses.
i also narrowed my DOF by choosing a higher F stop (f/16) b/c i was shooting such a broad focal range.
next time, try to set your camera on the ledge and use the self-timer, or boost your ISO for a faster shutter and narrower DOF. this should give you a sharper shot!
Hi Troy. thank you for the tip. I’ll go out tonight to coit tower and depending on cloud cover, will try some of your tips once the sun goes down!
Wow! Great picture.
Is that a shooting star I see in the sky?
nice! is that someone’s tag on the dark wall on the bottom?
