Who Loves You, Baby?

Sutter & Sansome, 1996

Back in 1996, I was working at the intersection of 2nd & Market. Each and every day the man pictured above would walk by my shop, wave a loaf of sourdough in my face, and scream obscenities about the San Francisco 49′ers.

Eventually, I moved on and just assumed this fellow found something better to do with his time. I guess not.

Pretty sure he’s the same guy featured in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF6W3206l70

  2. Lord — the link to the video was ugly… I think we would be a lot better off if S.F.M.F. had been eaten at birth by his mother… The guy needs medication — I think a joint up his a.. or a nice acid trip would probably do it…

  3. Travis says:

Yeah, this guy is/was a notorious downtown lurker, and I’d say nine out of ten times you’d see him he’d have his shirt off, even when it was 50 degrees. He’s made a few random appearances in some local skate vids, always ranting and raving about something or another. Not at all surprised to see he’s behind the AC Transit fight incident.

  4. Patrick says:

same guy. same tattoo on left arm. nice find!

    • swampfox09 says:

That picture is not the old man on the bus. That man you see in this picture died over two years ago. His nickname was “ANGRY BILL” Or SOURDOUGH BILL.

      • Troy says:

This picture is absolutely the man on the bus. As mentioned two times prior, you can tell by the tattoo on his left arm.

I worked on Market Street for 5 years and am very familiar with this fellow.

  5. affinity says:

It must be difficult to be angry at that level everyday…the comment on tv this am was “he was off his meds”.

  6. Reality says:

OK, so the young punk goes after him after he moves and gets beat down for trying to be a thug. And then cries victim? WTF. Little punk got what he deserved.

And that ain’t the same dude. I remember the guy that used to walk around with the bread, that guy died a few years back. His daughter was going around trying to find out about him after his death.

    • Troy says:

that is most definitely the same fellow — they both have the same tattoo on their left arm.

google ‘amber lamps’ or ‘AC transit fight’ and find 15 years of history on this guy.

  7. Joe Ellis says:

    Awesome. Simply awesome.

  8. Christopher Rogers says:

Would he be yelling obscenities downtown in the 1990s for or against the 49ers?

  9. Sparkie says:

I was just wondering what happened to ol’ Tom. He was a North Beach fixture for years, popping into the Trieste to yell at whomever. I believe I remember hearing of an arrest for an assault in Washington Square a few years back… Seems he’s moved on. Mystery solved.

  10. Mike says:

He’s back in the city in North Beach.

  11. Sparkie says:

Hey, thanks for the heads up, Mike. Good spotting! And of course it’s the Trieste!

  12. doubting thomas says:

few things: some confusion over the date of the funeral (Wednesday vs. Friday), the vidoegrapher captured something w/out being told to “turn it off”, and maintained a very steady hand despite the excitement or even panic, ole’ Tommy keeps appearing for his “15 minutes” time and time again (see PacBell incident) .. any chance this is staged ? love to interview the person with the phone-cam…just sayin’

  13. asdasdasd says:

    ITS EPIC BEARD MAN

  14. unabashed says:

Ridiculous that people make fun of this man. Have some freaking respect for a Veteran. Have you ever seen some of the crap he’s bound to have seen in Vietnam? I certainly have not, but have known many a Veteran that has, and most of them are typically a little off, compliments of the U.S. government for shipping them to that shit hole. So, instead of sitting around snickering or turning up your noses to ole Tom, you might make way and have some respect.
