Kanye Omari West
by Troy on Jul.28, 2010
Kanye West, as seen in my office earlier today.
During his visit, he encouraged the world to be more creative and artistic in it’s approach to design and fashion. He also mentioned that he wished the mainstream media would get some better photographers.
Meta! You see a photo of me taking his portrait here.

Not a big Kanye fan, but this is a fantastic portrait, Troy. Your B&W treatment is pretty damn clean, too.
Curious, what’s the story behind the photo? Were you specifically asked to shoot his picture? Did you approach him? Was there a line of people waiting to take pics? Also, were you nervous?

i approached him, but the light was all kinds of crazy. there was a long line of fellow employees waiting to get their photos w/ Kanye, so i did the best that i could.
ideally, i would have had 3 minutes alone w/ him and put him against a more neutral backdrop.

Dear Mr. West:
Regarding your observation that the fashion industry should get some better photographers — well, hey, you’re looking directly into the lens of the DUDE who can do the job!

Nice shot. I’m not a fan of that guy’s music or statements, but it looks like you caught the pain of being a pampered celebrity in his eyes.
