(Event) Henri Cartier-Bresson’s “Impassioned Eye” Film Screening & Ice Cream Social

by admin on Aug.09, 2010

“Dieppe, France, 1926″ – Henri Cartier-Bresson

We welcome you to join us in partnership with SOMArts for a wonderful, evocative film biography of the man considered to be one of the greatest photographers of the last century: Henri Cartier-Bresson. The film features interviews with Isabelle Huppert, Arthur Miller, and others.

Please arrive at SOMArts at 2:00pm on Sunday, August 15th and enjoy some delicious ice cream while viewing a slideshow of images taken during the SoMa photo walk last month.

The film screening will begin at 3:00pm. Run time is 72 minutes. A $10 suggested donation is appreciated to cover the cost of licensing of the film and the ice cream. Space is limited and advance reservation is recommended (so we know how much ice cream to get). Reserve your spot online. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

We hope to see you there!

SFBG "Best Of The Bay"

Wow.

Just found out earlier this morning that Caliber is featured in this year’s SF Bay Guardian “Best of the Bay” issue.  We won the “Best Eyes on The City” award, which is quite an honor. What a wonderful surprise to wake up to!

A big thank you goes out to our fellow San Francisco photographers (way too many to name here) for sharing your images every day and supporting our group! Please take some time and check them out in those links over there on the right, as well as in our collection of interviewees here.

Photos: Mission District Photowalk

by admin on Apr.19, 2010

Thank you to everyone who came out to shoot yesterday! Almost 50 of you came along, battling a harsh sun and the narrow Mission District sidewalks.

We met at 16th & Mission, with Frank Chu leading us south towards 21st street, where we made a left. At Harrison, we headed north towards 24th, stopping by Balmy Alley along the way. As we made our way up 24th towards Mission Street, the group decided some beers were in order. This decision routed us north, back up Mission Street to 16th. We stopped in the Kilowatt bar for refreshments, after which we made our way to Dolores Park to wrap things up.

If you came out yesterday, please tag your Flickr images with ‘calibersf041810‘ to have them show up on that page. If you’ve posted them to your website or blog, leave the URL in the comments and we’ll link them below.

Falling Down

Thank you to everyone who came out to shoot yesterday! It was great to hang out with so many passionate photographers and talk about our photos, cameras, techniques, and processing tips.

Everyone met at the Montgomery Muni/Bart station at 12:30. Frank Chu was one of the first to arrive and accompanied us for the entire route. It soon proved very handy to have that sign along, as it made catching up with the group much easier. We headed up Montgomery towards North Beach, walked Columbus to Washington Square Park, made a U-turn and headed back down Stockton towards Chinatown. We regrouped and grabbed a couple of beers at Cathay House, and marched down California towards Elephant & Castle for dinner and drinks. Along the way, we stopped by to say “hi” to our friends at 555 California Street.

The Caliber Flickr Pool

Crown Fountain

“Crown Fountain” by group member duna12

One of the best ways to learn about photography is through the viewing, critiquing, and engaging of photos from fellow photographers. And for better or worse, Flickr houses the largest collection of publicly accessible photography in the world.

“I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed.” — Gary Winogrand

A few weeks ago, we launched Caliber on Flickr — a group dedicated to better understanding the world around us through discussing the photography of others.

In that short time, we’ve grown to 75 members — several of whom are very active in the discussion of the photography of our members.

“As I progressed further with my project, it became obvious that it was really unimportant to me where I chose to photograph. The particular place simply provided an excuse to produce work…you can only see what you are ready to see — what mirrors your mind at that particular time.” — George Tice

How does this pool work? Each submission needs to be approved by an Admin or Moderator before being accepted to the pool. Members can add up to 1 photo each day, from anywhere in the world.

Would you like to participate? Great! Something to consider when you submit an image…ideally it is a shot that you are very proud of or one that means something special to you. You do not have to submit every day, but only when you feel you’ve seen and shot something beautiful with your camera.

If you are interested in submitting to our group, we’d love to see what you are seeing. You can click here to get started.

Thank you to everyone who showed up to our first photowalk yesterday! It was great to meet so many other photographers and talk about our photos, cameras, techniques, and processing tips.

Everyone met at Powell Street cable car turnaround and started to head west up Market. It was immediately apparent that the harsh light beaming into the street would make getting good photos a challenge. So, we headed towards Hayes Valley, walked through Alamo Square, and up to Divisadero. We eventually made our way to 18th and Castro, with the last photographers heading into The Mission for a burrito at Taqueria Cancun.

Welcome To Caliber!

by admin on Oct.01, 2009

The Caliber Collective

Group portrait on top of the partially demolished TIE Warehouse in San Francisco’s Bayview district.

Hello, and welcome to Caliber: a group of four San Francisco/Bay Area photographers: Brad Evans, Stuart Dixon, Julie Michelle, and Troy Holden.

Our subject matter will focus on The City and its surrounding cities, with the occasional trek across state and international borders.

We hope you’ll take a look around and like what you are seeing. We’ve back-filled a couple of pages of images curated from our personal favorites, along with a little bit of insight behind each shot.

Make sure to check back daily, bookmark and/or RSS us — we will be updating this site more often than not.

If you’d like to introduce yourself, feel free to do so below in the comments.

*We are proud to be powered by Laughing Squid. Many thanks goes to Scott and the Laughing Squid support team for getting us up and running!
