Welcome to CaliberSF — a group of four San Francisco/Bay Area photographers: Julie Michelle, Stuart Dixon, Travis Jensen, and Troy Holden.
“I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed.” — Garry Winogrand
Our subject matter will focus on The City and its surrounding cities, with the occasional trek across state and international borders.
“As I progressed further with my project, it became obvious that it was really unimportant to me where I chose to photograph. The particular place simply provided an excuse to produce work…you can only see what you are ready to see — what mirrors your mind at that particular time.” — George Tice
Our goal is to promote photography while acknowledging the present as well as the past, in whichever form it may show itself.
“The camera is my tool. Through it I give reason to everything around me.” — André Kertész

Hey guys (and miss),
I randomly came across your site on The Click and I’m very impressed. I’ve been to SF many times before and I really like the pictures. Keep up the good work!
Jon
Thanks Jon for making it here. Stick around!
Thanks Jon. Like Stuart says, we hope you come back. And you can call me a guy, too.
Thanks Jon!
Great site and images (I also like the commentary for each). Really glad to have found it (via Brad’s CitySnaps site). Looking forward to seeing more of all your great work.
Thanks,
Randy
Hi Randy,
Thanks for the comment and finding us via Brad. I’m glad you like the commentary too. I’m never sure how much to write (thinking a photo should speak for itself) but I always like writing a bit too.
Hey Randy, thanks for stopping by and checking us out!
[...] Caliber, by the way, is the new photography website by Bay Area photographers Stuart Dixon, Brad Evans, Troy Holden (formerly Plug1), and Julie Michelle. Check ‘em out if you haven’t already! [...]
Hey guys,
Love your new site and have been following What I’m Seeing for quite a while. I’d love to feature you guys on Thrillist SF, which I write/edit. Hit me up if you’d like to chat about it.
Nick Elliott

Hey Nick-
That would be great. Ill send you an email later today.
-Troy
I got to this site via Brad’s blog at citysnaps.net.
Just wanted to wish your group well and commend you on your initiative and your photos.
Also, I’ll offer another favorite photographer’s quote that might fit your manifesto
“It’s about time we started to take photography seriously and treat it as a hobby.” Elliott Erwitt
Hi Michael,
Thanks for the visit and the comment. I really like that quote, and just having read a bit about Elliott Erwitt and how his humor played a big part in his artistic philosophy, I think that quote is perfect here, too.
Hope to see you around here again.
I just read about your site on Thrillist, and was immediately curious to check out your photos… good stuff! I take walks around the city all the time, and some of the sights I see would be hard to describe in words — your photos really capture the essence of San Francisco!
Hi Cabran,
Thanks for finding us (we’re thrilled about Thrillist!) and so glad to know that our images resonate with you. Please come back and visit us again… we’ve got lots of images to share.
Hi,
How can I purchase prints from this site?
-R
Hi Ross,
That’s a very good question! And something we’ll get back to you about!
Great photos of the city! And a nice site that allowed me to put off doing some things I was supposed to be doing. Thrillist was was the jump in point. I have a store in SOMA that can accommodate art and……photos. If you want to do a group show, let me know. Keep shootin’……….
thanks Roger! ive been to 440 Brannan before; my friend EDDIE had a show there a few months back.
ill email you to discuss further.
First of all I would like to say thank you. I am a street photographer from San Francisco and you have inspired me to keep doing what I do. Please take some time and check out some of my work at lensexposure dot com. I would appreciate any feedback and if you’re ever looking for someone to add to your collective I would appreciate the consideration. Like I’ve said in the past, “Street photography is a way of life and philosophy, not just taking photos”, and you guys have it mastered. Thanks again.
Cheers,
Henry Navarro
First of all, thank YOU. I think we all derive inspiration from each other. I’ve looked at your site many times, I love your shots. We are planning some events in the very near future and you should come hang out with us. Stay tuned.
Henry, you’ve got some great photos on your site. Thanks for introducing yourself and I hope we meet you soon.
Hey Guys – Good stuff. If you ever want to get highlighted on my site (www.financialsamurai.com) pls let me know. I include a picture with a new post each time, and am looking for original content. I want to show case and support the Bay Area fotographers!
FS
Please consider changing your font size and color design. It is gorgeous but at 60 I can barely read it and the hot links are in fact unreadable.
Gorgeous work. A huge contribution to San Francisco, but please make it more readable for the old hippies…thanks so much.
Heard loud and clear, affinity. We’re looking into the scheme to make it perfect, this comment will go in under advisement.
very very very good pictures!!! keep up the good work guys!!!!
You’ve put together a very nice collection here. I like browsing projects like this when I’ve got that “burned out with SF” feeling. There’s so much more out there to photograph and y’all are finding the right stuff. Thanks for the inspiration.
Speaking of which, here’s an idea : swap identities for a day of shooting. See if you can put on the eyes of your colleagues. It seems hard and is actually harder than you think, but even with the inevitable imperfect results you learn a lot about yourself and your friends.
Troy, I just wanted to say thanks for publishing my short profile. Your handling of the text including links was grand. I do need an editor though.
Larry
the pleasure was mine, Larry. i hope to continue to talk about photography over the coming months and years.
you have a goldmine of images that i hope more ppl can see.
Regarding your goal, is the idea behind this site to promote YOUR photography or photography in general? If yours, can you elaborate on why this would be important to us? So far, my impression is that you simply showcase your own photography. Thanks for clarifying.
speaking for myself, Caliber serves to promote our photography as well as the photography of others.
check back on Thursday’s for an interview with a friend or fellow Flickr user, and check back Friday’s for a guest entry from a member of our Flickr group.
by promoting both, the hope is that a healthy discussion of photography (ours & others) will help us all (us & others) better understand our cameras and the world around us.
hope that helps to clarify!
Music to my ears! thanks for clarifying. I feel that there are so many great photographers who have only the platform of Flickr to promote their work, and I hope CaliberSF will give some of these an opportunity to voice their work! Keep it up Troy!
Super Heros!

I like the cute one on the left
but I’d swear that was Grocho Marx on the right…
I’d sure clutch my purse a little tighter if I were to run into you bad-ass WASPian gang members! (Oh, not gang members? My bad…)
You guys are the best! I’ve loved almost every single piece of your work and I dont think anybody can capture SF’s beauty like you guys do. Keep ‘em coming and I hope I can catch one (or all) of you in the city while you’re capturing those wonderful moments.
Best,
Maha
Yes, y’all seriously rock! Great format and fantastic images. Have really been enjoying this. Keep it up!
Love your site! I’ve been following for about 4 months now and love how you capture SF in so many creative ways. After a long day at work I love coming home and seeing all the awesome shots you’ve taken. awesome job!
